    About that sky...

I tend to experiment with Nik as well as ON1 for their effects. Many times I don't like my options with either and am happy to keep my original edits. However, both programs have some very good effects that at times, I like a lot. Additionally, I will many times adjust the opacity of their...

    About that sky...

For some reason, instead of going to bed, I was up late last night working on this again. I took my edited version, backed down the exposure about .75 stop and then ran it through Nik Color Effects Pro. Don't remember what I did there because I was trying all kinds of options. But this is what...

    About that sky...

Whatever you did to the sky Jim, (more contrast?) has created a visible halo effect around the top of El Cap. My experience with trying to create potential contrast in skies is that you get either the halo effect where the sky meets non-sky and/or excessive noise in the sky. The excessive noise...

OK, here is the straight out of the camera, no adjustments image. Only had to zap one car. ;-)

    A Small Forest Scene

Very nice Alan. In my evolution to try and improve my photography, I've become more focused on trying to see more intimate scenes in nature. This is exactly the kind of scene I need to find more often.

    About that sky...

Not sure what you're looking for Jim. I've made many little edits along the way (as well as cloning out a small car down the road near the photog standing in the street) and have many versions. The original, out of the camera photo would be lacking all of these edits. But, I did discover my...

    About that sky...

Thanks. It is as you say, natural and I'm OK with that except that it just seems to annoy me that the sky there is so bland. I guess my thought is that it could be so much better with a better sky. It's not uncommon to have a bland sky in Yosemite, it just disappoints me that it isn't better...

    About that sky...

I'm not sure if this is the right place or not but I'd like some thoughts. First let me express that I personally do not like replacing a sky that wasn't there when I captured my image. That's me. For those that do, that's OK, to each his own, but I don't want this to go off on a debate of the...

Beautiful capture. I especially like #1.

    Backwards Sunset

I don't know how many pixels you have to work with, but I wonder what it would look like if you cropped a rectangle no bigger than the glass, and made it look as though you shot it from inside a house or building?

    Bryce again with edits

No. I didn't mean to imply that. Sorry if it came across that way. It's just that as I looked at it it reminded me of how would I know. How would a judge know? Or just the man on the street.

    Bryce again with edits

Yeah, that's the other issue. The land slopes, you know you shot it correctly, but the viewer thinks you got it wrong. :-)

    Bryce again with edits

OK. I've never looked to see just how detailed my camera is with that. But then I've always struggled to have the patience needed sometimes. ;-) Yeah, ultimately I get it pretty close with an allowance for room to crop in post if need be. But I do love to second guess myself. lol! And I should...

    Bryce again with edits

But if nothing in the shot has a straight line how can you be sure? The line in the viewfinder is only helpful if you can find something to align it with. In theory yes. In nature not quite as easy. Ultimately I do try and use something in the shot as a guide so that a viewer doesn't look at...

    Bryce again with edits

I like the B&W, but I think I'm still more partial to the color. But I'm really curious about something. I have photos that share a similarity with this one and it drives me crazy when editing. How do you know you have the horizon right, when the image has no obvious horizon line to work with?

    Yosemite Falls reflections

I don't mind people offering suggestions. But I'm probably done putting any more work into it. I don't think it's worth it. I just thought it might be worth putting it out there and letting people comment. I enjoy discussing things about photos because it can provide a means to learn and get...

    Yosemite Falls reflections

Yeah, the trees are also reflected in the water and I was trying to capture that. It does appear that that is more visible in the color version.

Exploring the Oaks up Metcalf Rd

Very nice Dan. I know what you mean about trying to ride a camera backpack and tripod on a road bike. I just ordered an inexpensive folding bike to use for camping trips and I'm already thinking about how to use that bike while carrying camera gear on my back. The key to the folding bike is the...

    Yosemite Falls reflections

OK, I was inspired to post this, by Jim's Half Dome reflection. This shot was taken last year. I worked it quite a bit and was never happy with the results even though I like the concept. I tried color as well as B&W. I really hate when the sky above any of the icons is cloudless. It's hard to...
