Some snow on the peaks. The aspen are peak at 8,000 feet and still green at lower elevations. Oaks are long gone. Some early drop aspen as you can see in this shot, but not as bad as in previous years.

Eastern Sierra - Lone Pine. It’s extremely windy today, so I guess it’s fine then that in the Lone Pine area everything is still green. Usually by now the cottonwoods in the washes would be starting to turn yellow, or already yellow, but not this year.

Jim, I drove up to June Lake today. Must have missed you in Lone Pine. :) The wind was howling in Bishop when I stopped for lunch. Had to change from shorts to long pants.

Sorry to have missed you John. Yes it was cold indeed, it was 36 degrees out as we were shooting the evening light up towards South Lake.

We did have a bunch of people meeting up in Bishop, you must have missed the thread about it.

Jeffrey and Dave are still up there, if you comment in that thread they might see it if you want to meet up with either of them. Both of them are up there until the middle of the week I think.

I hope you are getting some good shots.

Squaw Peak 10-8-2018

I drove up this afternoon to see how the color was doing. This is in the mountains directly east of Provo Utah. This is mostly oak country and most of the larger oaks were bare as you can see in this image. The aspen are mixed yellow and still green. We had some fresh snow yesterday and I hoped to catch it, but the clouds were too loo for the most part.

Wow, that still looks awesome Ben even if some trees are bare. If I hadn't driven 5000 miles the last 2 weeks I would be tempted to drive over there.

From Sunny Sra

Eastern Sierra, McGee Creek area.

A mix of green and gold. I had heard from someone else that the color was maybe 10 to 40% gold and that by Thurs or Friday they thought the color would be really nice.

I was at McGee this past Saturday and it might need another full week for some peak color. I was surprised how green some areas of the June Lake loop were. Some spots were nice but a good portion needs a least a couple more days.

Eastern Sierra, North Lake

Pretty nice color, basically peak there so if you want it you should shoot it in the next few days. The east shoreline all of the aspens were bare, so if you are used to climbing up on the hill to shoot down and get the east shoreline aspens in the foreground, there is no point.

Hey Eric, thanks for the update, and I wish I had known or remembered that you were up there, it would have been awesome to have had you meet with the group we had there. Are you still up there?

Jim insisted I post a color report from the Bishop area using my iPhone. These are north fork of Bishop Creek last night and this morning. After everyone left the meet up I just camped among the aspen in a 25° night. Joyous.

Report: Bishop Canyon has it all from new trees to green trees and every stage in between. I think there’s at least a week or more of good shooting opportunities coming up.

With Fall just around the corner, there have already been reports I have seen from people that Fall Colors are coming early this year due supposedly to the dry weather many parts of the country has seen.

As you hear or see anything related to the fall colors, please add them to this thread. I am already mentally preparing to hit the road early this year.

Jim
I am still driving around Vermont so this is the only photo I have to show the fall colors. I understand it has pretty much reached the peak in most areas. This photo was taken yesterday 10/12 in Woodstock and colors are almost there. Many areas around Woodstock are at peak. I drove around Hogback mountain this morning and Stowe in the north during the late afternoon and it was all deep orange and red.

OK, Spent four more days in the eastern CA Bishop area after the Sunday FocalWorld meet up and shoot. Things were generally barely OK in most places. Up to the end of Rock Creek Road and back, and there were a few patches but nothing worth shooting. Convict lake never has a lot of color but I like looking across and hoping for nice clouds, which were there. South Fork of Bishop Creek Canyon seemed to be the most photogenic, but frankly, it didn't get me too excited because I've been there so darn many times photographing the same locations over again. I'm craving the scene in other states and New England, where there are various colors all over. I don't want to look at yellow now for a few weeks. Sorry for the lousy report but I am rather particular and need a change-up.

Jeffrey, I’m glad to hear you say that. While I always enjoy my trips I don’t always find things as great as many people claim. I got rave reviews from the Bishop visitor center regarding North Lake and Rock Creek. While I found parts of the North Lake area still colorful, most of it was not, and Rock Creek was quite disappointing. Fortunately I still found some nice areas worth shooting.
