Fall Color Reports - 2018

Traveled this last weekend thru Indiana, Ohio and Pennsylvania and fall color just has not arrived. An occasional tree will show some color. The farm fields have gone to the fall brown/tan dry look. Stopped at Rickets Glen in Pennsylvania. Water is at spring level and if you look carefully I found one tree with the leaves changing:

It’s raining today in SW Colorado. I am up at Dallas Divide as the County Roads really aren’t safe when it rains this much.

Grand Tetons, Sep 22-27, 2018

Sorry this is late, I only got home Saturday and had no way to post prior to now. It’s probably too late to get to the Tetons this year unless you are close enough for a short trip. The weather this week is also supposed to be rainy.

The aspen were either prime, or near prime when they were not hit by SAD and withered and dead. The cottonwoods likewise. Schwabacher was a disappointment in regards to tree health, there was some color, but it was not vibrant.

Oxbow was pretty good, either nice color, or just changing, a mix of green and yellow. The best color seemed to be up the Gros Ventre road and Slide Lake. There was also some color up by Shadow mountain.

Yellowstone is not noted for color, but the Lamar and Hayden valleys had some.

Hwy 89 south of Jackson was a pleasure.

Oxbow area.

San Juan mountains. Still no snow on the peaks to speak of, but the color is going fast. The Aspens in general are either bare, golden or lime green.

CR 9 - Aspens are almost bare. Some yellow and some green ones till.

CR 7
Mostly golden. The favorite meadow area on CR 7 has golden aspen, but the only negative is all of the brush in the meadow is still green, and normally it’s orange or red at this time. But still now is the time to shoot it as the aspen may not last much longer.

Jim wanted me to add this here, it is from Marysvale Ut, riding the Piute ATV trail. This is up Mill Creek rd I think in the Tushar Range. Monroe Mountain also has some good color on top & in the lower canyons. Taken 9/28/18

Spent the day in Hope Valley in the Sierra yesterday. Color was coming out of the trees with the storm (rain but not much wind) but still a lot of green. Spotty where it was turning, turned and waiting to turn. The aspen and cottonwood along the river towards Woodfords are pretty much peak. Storm today and wind tomorrow, so get there soon. Dogwoods in the lower elevations are a wonderful hue right now.

Molas Pass area off of Hwy 550 South of Durango.

Molas Pass itself had a little color, but the really nice stand if aspen down by the pond that the overlook looks over is stripped bare already.

Little Molas Lake has most of its scrubs bare already too.

Coal Bank Summit - on Hwy 550 a few miles south of Silverton and Molas Pass.

It’s pretty stripped bare.

North of Durango. The color here picks up with mixtures of gold and green with very few stripped trees.

iPhone shot that is really poor quality but gives you an idea

The alpine meadows and blue berries are prime in the Cascades right now.

Ferns still have some color

Berries are red

Dusting of snow provides nice contrast on Green Mountain.

This is in the Chama area of northern New Mexico. The Scrub oak has some nice color, the cottonwoods are a mix of green and gold.

Durango, just north of it on HWY 550. Lots of trees are bare, whole sides of mountains are bare. There is still some gold, a few green, but overall it seems like 40% are already bare in that area.
