Canon R5

Ben,

I did not realize you had decided to order an R5? Very cool! Who did you order from - do you have a delivery estimate yet?

I had been very happy with my EF 16-35 F/4, until a very rough moment when the contents of my camera bag ended up strewn across the concrete floor at the DIA security checkpoint about 4 years ago. My 5DsR landed on the corner of its L bracket, and came out unscathed. My 70-300 F/4-5.6 L IS was visibly broken. My 24-105 F/4 L IS was on the camera and seemed to be untouched as well. But my 16-34 F/4 L IS, while appearing fine physically, was never quite right after that. I initially sent the 70-300 in for repair and it came back good as new. Eventually, after noticing softness in the corners that seemed worse than when I got the lens originally, I sent in the 16-35 too. It came back, but the problem has largely persisted. I have still taken some good images with it, but I am hopeful the 15-35 will outperform it in many ways. The extra stop is of less importance to me, and in fact if an RF F/4 version that was lighter and smaller were available yet I would opt for that instead, although I think at F/2.8 the current RF 15-35 could be pressed into service as a nightscape lens as well. It appears to be extremely good on star shapes in the corners wide open at 15mm...

I'd be interested too in how the 15-35 works for you both as a regular ultra wide as well for night work. I do like the 16-35 f4 L IS and my current plan is to continue to use it adapted. I might swap the 11-24 for a 15-35 down the road.

Well, that's nice someone got one. I ordered on July 11th, and was supposed to get mine end of September. Nothing showed up, and then B&H went on a religious holiday. When the open back up this coming Monday, if I do not get some sort of a shipment announcement before then I will be calling them to figure out what's what. Pretty frustrating.

So it took until this past Monday to FINALLY get my R5. I have not had a lot of time to shoot with it yet, but my initial impressions so far are very favorable. I do not expect to see any discernable resolution differences (as I have said before), although since my trusty 5DsR is still with me, I could do some comparisons in the future perhaps. I can say that the EVF has not been the adjustment to get used to that I was thinking it might be, even as a glasses wearer, and so many of the other traits of the camera appear to be universally positive so far. The AF is accurate and very snappy, and I am so glad not to have to worry about any microfocus adjustments any more. Now I will be waiting for the 2 to 3 RF lenses I want to buy to be back in stock, but for now my adapted EF lenses are working wonderfully (with better AF than I consistently got on my DSLR...)

Thanks for the report Mike, when did you order yours? My 28 July order is still not filled at B&H.

I received an unexpected offer for my R. So I sold it and bought an R5. I ordered directly from Canon, who had it in stock, and received it today.

Of course all my Canon lenses are in California (I bought it now to save the sales tax), so it'll be another week before I can really try it out.

Thanks Kyle, I just placed and order at Canon and cancelled my B&H order. I get two day shipping.

Many smaller retailers also have it in stock and they are getting regular supplies. B&H apparently have a backlog as of now over 2K.

I ordered mine on the night of July 11th, a little over 2 days after the initial announcement, right after B&H reopened from their usual Saturday shutdown. So it was quite a good wait for me. I am now sitting on backorders for the RF 15-35 and the RF 24-105 from B&H as well. Hopefully won't be as long of a wait, we'll see. Until then I have the adapter so can use my EF lenses, which seem to work very well on the R5. I imagine I could get these faster from another source, but between the PayBoo card savings and the no questions asked return policy I like to shop B&H. The delays have been pretty frustrating though.

I have not had a lot of time to use it yet, but it really seems like an upgrade from the 5DsR in just about every way.

My R5 arrived today and I am going through the set up process. Spent a lot of time getting Breeze Downloader to work, I need an upgrade to download R5 raw files.

I did take a few test images and used Photoshop to download. The first one I processed looked pretty good.

Do check on the FW on the camera as well as the RF 24-105. There is v1.2.0 out for the R5 and my lens FW was not the latest version either. Pretty easy to update both. Get them from usa.canon.com.

Hi Jameel. I tried a firmware update, but it cannot find it on my SD card. I suspect it needs to be on card 1, the CF express card. I don't have one and was not planning on spending the money for one and a reader. The other method requires EOS Utility which I would need to download and install. That's my next move.

It should work on the SD card. I used that to update both the camera and lens FW. Make sure the FW file is on the root of the card.
