Canon R5

With interest in this announced but not yet released (or fully described) camera at a fever pitch, I wanted to see who else might have this on their radar. I have been thnking to make a move to mirrorless for a while, almost pulling the trigger when the Canon R came out and Kyle started giving us excellent insights and feedback on it. But I really liked the resolution from my 5DSr. Now this new R5 looks to be close enough in resolution so as to be indistinguishable from my 5DSr, plus be a much better all round body for other pursuits as well. If it turns out to have decently improved high ISO and dynamic range over my 5DSr, I am thinking I may take the plunge. I'm not into video, so in some ways perhaps I would be paying for some extra features, but IBIS would be welcome, as would 12 fps should I wish to pursue more wildlife shooting.

Wondering if anyone else has any thoughts about this body...

I am also thinking about it and watching. I really want the high MP version rumored, but 45 would probably be enough. Like you, the vidio would be a waste for me.

I don't think final specs are out yet. I'm interested, too, as I love the mirrorless workflow in the field that my Fuji's provide. It may have high burst rate, but what is it that 5 to 10 fps doesn't already do?

Video doesn't bother me, it's a part of every camera now, so I don't worry about what cost it adds to a camera, you aren't getting one without it. I would just focus on the still photography aspect of this potential camera.

This could be a good camera for you Ben!

For me it will depend on the high iso performance and DR. I do like the mirrorless bodies and the ability to have a CPL adapter to work with lenses that don't support one otherwise. If the performance is there it may replace my 5DSR as well. I'm going to wait and see this time though.

On my radar as well. Will of course wait for reviews on the released product to see how much better it is compared to the 5DsR to justify the jump. Just mirrorless won't do it for me as the DSLR workflow or weight doesn't bother me. If I do make the jump would likely add the 24-105 RF version and adapt the other EF lenses I have.

My idea as well. 24-105 covers almost all my landscape needs and of course I can adapt the 11-24, but I can also do panos for wider views and save weight. Weight is becoming a concern for me. I wonder how much IQ I would lose coming from the EOS24-70 f2.8 to the 24-105RF? I love that 24-70.

Most of what I have seen has indicated that the RF 24-105 pretty much matches the quality of the 24-70. I do have both and am not afraid to use either one in any condition. It is nice having the extra reach with it.

Going for a hike today and leaving the 5DSR at home. I'm bringing the R and the 24-105.

It would indeed. I only print up to 24-36 and this has more than enough MP for that, but I have never been disappointed by more MP and Canon is rumored to have a mirrorless 5DSR replacement coming with 70 MP.

You answered one question about IQ with the 24-105. Now I have looked for the CPL adaptor and don't find it, has Canon started shipping it and do you have one?

Anyone have any idea what price this will be? I assume it's the mirrorless equal of a 5Dmk1V which is $2499. The 5Drs is $3500 so this camera ought to be less, simply because the mirrorless cost less than the SLR at any given MP level.

price speculation seems to be no cheaper than $3500, credible speculation is in the same range as previous 5 model DSLR bodies of ~$3500-$4000, and then some folks saying upwards of that to $500, or even more. I am feeling like the high half of the $3500-$400 range makes sense, maybe right at the 5DSr range or so...

The switch to an EVF will be a adjustment for me, but one i think I could get used to and one that does also come with some new functionality.

Things I know I will like more:

1) AF off the sensor even when shooting through viewfinder (i.e. no more AF microadjust follies to contend with...)

2) IBIS to help with those times when handholding is the only chance to get a shot

3) Higher FPS for starting to dabble more seriously with Wildlife shooting

Things I hope will be better than my 5DSr:

4) Dynamic range

5) High ISO noise

Things to be unsure about as of now (besides obvious price and availability):

6) Video shooting durations in higher bitrate modes (although I am not a video shooter)

7) Intervalometer? (some newer models without one, like EOS R)

8) Focus stacking? EOS (RP has it but EOS R still inexplicably does not...)

I will plan on waiting for reviews, and also perhaps rent one first too.

Reasons to For Me Not to Wait for High Rez EOS R Style Body

9) Rez of R5 close to 5DSr, which has proven to suit even my large printing needs so far

10) 5DSR has been great landscape body, but has been chalenging as either a nightscape body or a wildlife body. If new High rez R jumps up to rumored 70 - 85 MP range, it seems like it could still have issues with those tasks compared to the R5. I am ready to compromise a little on resolution to get a camera that covers every shooting situation I am encounter.

11) Best Guess for high Rez R style body is end of this year start of next year, and that was before COVID-19 mess. I have already waited a while to jump to mirrorless. I am ready to make the switch this year, unless the R5 somehow falls down on delivering the promise it has on apaper...

That's my thinking in a nutshell...

5D MK IV is marked down now from it's original price when it was a new model. Canon sold it body-only for $3499 (their usual MO for the current 5D models) up until last year. I would expect this one to be right around the same with kit pricing certainly higher.

Jameel posted a link to it and yes I do have one. My favorite use is with the 17TS for waterfall scenes. I can keep the vertical lines straight and control the reflections to get the look I want without a bulky wonderpana system. This image is an example.

Oh, and I'd be shooting this scene tomorrow morning if the dang park wasn't closed due to overcrowding during the lock down.

Good shot. Maybe I will be sorry I sold the 17TSE. I was never able to focus a manual focus lens, but now with live view it does not matter.
