    Winged Wednesday 08/14/2024

Eric is off to Brazil to photograph some great birds for the next three weeks so here I am in my feeble attempt to fill in for him. I'll be in Phoenix tomorrow morning, so I am starting this post today. There is no other theme this week, just things with wings. I am going to feature birds...

    White Oak

This was in my archives, and I just processed it. It is an early morning blue hour image that fits the icy mood of this cold Thanksgiving morning.

    Maligne Lake Boat House

I just saw that Jasper National Park has a huge Wildfire going on and that one-third of the town of Jasper has burned to the ground. Thank goodness the area where this boat house exists has not been affected by the fire.

    Sunset at Second Beach

Sunsets here can be outrageous or subtle. When I was setting up for this one, I was disappointed because I was looking for outrageous. So, this one sat in my archives for many years. I am glad I didn't just discard it those many years ago.

Lost Image from Lost Dutchman State Park, AZ

While going through old boxes of slides, I found a box labeled Lost Dutchman. It contained the images from a roll of Velvia 50 I shot in 2000 when there was a super bloom. I have a few more I will post when I have a chance to process them.

    I'm Thinking About Keeping Cool.

It is hot here in Arizona. This brings back the experiences of cool weather in the Canadian Rockies last fall.

    Last Light at Monument Valley

My goal was to keep this image as simple as possible.

The Use of New Tools in Photoshop and Lightroom.

More than ever, people who have little, or no knowledge ask if you have used photo processing software to get the image they are evaluating. If you answer yes, they feel they are being cheated. What they don't know is that you have to process the RAW image to get it back to the way you saw it...

    Blue Canyon

One of the prettiest canyons in Arizona is part of the Moenkopi Wash on the Hopi reservation. This image was taken late in the day.

The Last Salvage Week - 06-23-2024

This will be the last "Salvage Week." Participation has been low, so I see no need to continue this effort when only three to four photographers participate. Here is my image for this week. It is the first image I ever took of Mt. Rainer back in the 1980s. It was so long ago I don't remember...

    Salvage Week - 06-09/2024

I have been traveling for the past two weeks so I haven't had a chance to put up this thread consistently. This is a Skunk Cabbage. It is an ugly plant and as you might have guessed from the name, it stinks. As a result, it is pollinated by flies. Here is a scientific article about other...

    Virginia Bluebells

This is an amazing plant. It spreads across floodplains and woodland floors during the spring. Up close, the flower buds are pink and turn a beautiful blue when they open. On floodplain. Close-up.

    Salvage Week - 05/26/2024

I couldn't get to this last week because I was in NJ attending my granddaughter's graduation. This is a rework of a Grand Canyon image from Lipan Point. This is a two-stitch panorama on a smokey day. After making the panorama I cropped it to make a better composition and then processed it. I...

My wife has finally convinced me to put some of my images up on the wall.

We have decided to put two large (30x24) verticals in the large space to the left and three medium images (20x16) on the right part of the wall. (See image outlines in the image below.) I have never put any of my images on my walls during the forty years I have been a professional...

    Salvage Week - 05/06/2024

This week I have worked on these three Painted Trillium plants from the Adirondack Mountains of NY. You can see lots of distracting elements on the forest floor. First, I used the Object Selection tool to select the plants and then used inverse selection to choose the background I then used...

    Salvage Week - 4/28/2024

It is time for another salvage project. This week I worked on an image from Mt. Rainier. It had deep shadows and needed a better crop. Original Rework

    Salvage Week - 04/21/2024

I have been busier than a mustard paddle at a Lions Picnic lately, so much so that it has been difficult to squeeze in work on Focal World. This week I have chosen an image of the poppy fields from Gorman, CA. It was 1/2 stop over exposed, tilted to the left, had a few dust bunnies and needed...
