The Maple Tree

I'm finally getting around to posting these -- those social gatherings with only your own household regulations are good for that sort of thing. I made a trip up to Portland, OR while I was visiting friends in Bend, 3 1/2 hours away. The Gardens had a timed entry, then if you wanted to shoot the maple tree, it was an additional $10 for a tripod (they take up more space, is their reason) and a line to stand in. There was a roped off area in front of the tree that only 2 photographers at a time were allowed into and each photographer was limited to 15 minutes. Most people were done in much less time than that. I was in the 1st non-member group allowed into the Gardens at 10am. The sun was hitting the maple around 11 & I hadn't reached it yet. Trying to work around the sun & other photographer was definitely challenging. When I was shooting on the right side, still in the roped off area, there were 4 other photographers in the roped off area. The Gardens completely closed due to COVID about 2 weeks later.

You did manage to get some really nice color with your session. The first image has the nice spread of the branches that is so often featured in images of this tree but I prefer the second one with less sky showing and a better color show.

The light was much better when I moved over to the right. Made me happy.

Both of these are so cool Monika! You did good I would say and you got in there in just the nick of time.

I think #1 is my favorite, though I might desaturate the greens just a bit in the lower left.

The greens on the bush lower left were super bright as the light was directly on it. I ended up having to color pick to get them down as much as I did. De-saturating & toning down the brightness etc was not nearly enough. If I go again, it would probably be worth becoming a member so I can get there earlier.

This is gorgeous! I love the effect of the light filtering through the leaves. The tree appears to glow. I wouldn't have liked to feel lost in a herd of photographers, but a shot like this is worth it!
