The Lady Looks Good

"The Lady Looks Good"

I've been missing in action for a while. Humble apologies!

My desktop computer has been down and am still having a few issues with it. We also were out of town for ten days earlier this month. We vacationed in New York City. I have many images to sort through as you can imagine. It will take some more time as we are leaving again in a few days. I wanted to get an image up and explain my absence.

Back Story: I do NOT like heights! In planning the NYC trip I called a helicopter company to inquire about a tour of lower Manhattan. My adult daughter was in the room and heard my conversation. When I got off of the telephone she simply said, "I want to go". But it was with that "I'm going!" tone of voice. Here is the unnerving part: the helicopter tour was a "doors off" tour! I don't like heights, but I desperately wanted the images! It was 30 minutes of unnerving terror and thrilling at the same time! I think the trip should have been about an hour earlier to get sharp images, so I'm not expecting many keepers from the tour. A father/daughter memory maker was experienced for sure.

Nothing very artistic here. Just a shot of Lady Liberty from a unique perspective. I was pretty sure I was going to die!!

LOL - great tale to go along with the image and a fun evening shot.

Questions - what kinds of exposure settings were you using to compensate for the motion of the helicopter and the evening light?

I think this is for sure a keeper, and that memory will be for sure. I would also like to know your settings. The images looks good at web size.

Thanks Alan and Ben for your kind words. This was F4 1/1600 ISO was at 12,800. I set the camera to shoot in shutter priority with auto ISO. I figured I would be experiencing enough sheer terror that I would not be able to think straight to make any adjustments! I was right! :)

Looks pretty good for iso12800. What camera?
Ben: This was with a Canon 5D Mark III with a 70-200mm lens on it. I also had a Canon R with a 24-105mm on it. I juggled between the two cameras. As you can imagine, I used the Canon 5D Mark III the most. We were allowed to take two devices with us. One could be your phone. They had a special clamp and strap for phones. Everything else had to be left at the hangar. My daughter took one camera and used my new iphone 11 PRO. She took three images with her camera and used my iphone for the rest of her images and video. She has video and images of her feet and legs outside the helicopter! She was in the co-pilots seat. I was in back and there was a solid partition that prevented me from seeing her during the flight. Good thing! I don't know if my heart could have taken that kind of added stress!

Very cool Tex! I sure like the look here on the web, at that iso you might be limited printing wise, but it looks good here. As you said, an hour earlier probably would have been prime shooting, but sometimes we just don't think about that when making the reservations.
