First of the Colors Last Fall

Last year was the first year I had a clue where I needed to go up the Columbia River Gorge to see fall colors from the perspective of flying a drone. The view from the air is quite different from what you can see on the ground and places you drove right by looking for the established trailheads turned out to be the gold mines for color shows. I made enough trips last fall to get a good record of when and where the best colors came out. I was looking through the shots last night from repeated trips and isolated Oct. 20 as the first visit where changing leaves really started to dominate the scene. This one shows a small unnamed lake that collects the flows from Latourell and Shepperds Dell Falls and the flow heading towards Mirror Lake at the base of Crown Point directly behind this view. This is a 2 shot panorama using a 70mm lens.

That's a very nice view. I hope you get a chance to get up there again this year.
Thanks Jim - getting back up to this place is a given since it's a 1/2 hour drive from my house in the mouth of the Gorge. If anything I will visit it even more often this year knowing what I can hope to see.

That's a nice scene, Alan. On the left, I like the meandering streams that line the autumn-colored trees. To the right, a narrow train track fits well into the scene.
The misty haze on the horizon also suits this scene nicely. Very nice!

Thanks Peter - the meandering streams both originate from the small lake and during the wet season (winter) the lake grows to cover all of the open ground between the trees. Fall is the end of our dry season so this is the low point for these wetlands. What the scene needed was a train coming towards me just past the curve :)

Yes, Alan, the train would be very useful there, then the scene would be "complete".. ;)
