Best of 2022

2022 was the year I finally sent cameras up into the air after decades of lusting to do aerial photography. I started out with a modest drone (DJI Mavic Air 2) but outgrew the camera after just a few months and ended up opening my wallet for a Mavic 3 with a far superior camera system. I did still take lots of images from the ground but sent up drones almost every chance I got since it gave me a whole new perspective on landscape scenes I had been shooting for years. I had a tough time narrowing down the field of favorites to end up with 10 for this thread. I could have easily filled out a group of 10 images from either my DSLR or aerial images but decided to present a mix instead.

1. In January I took a trip down towards the southern end of the Oregon coast to my favorite stomping grounds near Brookings. This first image is Arch Rock in the Samuel Boardman Scenic Corridor shot with the Mavic Air 2:

2. A sunrise shot at Harris Beach State Park:

4. An Air 2 image of Secret Beach in the Samual Boardman Scenic Corridor:

5. In March I decided to sell the RV I have called my home on the road for the past 8 years but not until I took one last trip down the Oregon coastline starting out up near Newport. One of my stops along the way was Florence where I used the Air 2 drone to get an overhead view of some of the lakes just south of Florence. This is a 3 shot panorama of Tahkenitch Lake:

6. Hard to pass up opportunities to head up into the Columbia River Gorge. There are drone flight restrictions in several places in the lower portions of the Gorge due to the number of people visiting all of the waterfalls but still plenty of places to explore. This is Beacon Rock shot with the Mavic 3 drone:

7. I have done a couple of trips out to the Florence area since selling off my RV. This is from a trip in May with a shot of the Heceta Head Lighthouse with the Mavic 3

8. This fall I was back out in Florence once again to explore places where I could never drive my old RV but can easily access with my truck. This is a shot from the headwaters of Cape Creek that flows out to the Pacific right near the Heceta Head Lighthouse:

9. A morning sunrise over the Siuslaw River just outside of Florence. Shot with the Mavic 3

10. A recent cold snap slowed down the hummingbirds near our house in Vancouver and gave me a chance to get some handheld shots of them perched in our trees. This is one of the better hummingbird images I have captured in our yard:

A fantastic year Alan. The drone pictures look like you had a lot of fun and created some wonderful images. Number 2 and 7 really grabbed me. Of course with my love of birds number 10 is a real keeper.

Thanks Ben!

Beautiful as always Alan. 2, 9 and 10 stood out to me. I loved the bird on the frozen branch. Happy New Year.
Thanks Kyle - the Harris Beach sunrise was one of the better ones I have shots down there.

Great series Alan! I think my favs are 5, 6, and 7.
Thanks Bob - those were amongst the ones I refused to cull when I was trying to whittle down the list.

Thanks Sunny - going places is why I like flying :) The Samuel Boardman Corridor (including Secret Beach) is my favorite place to shoot and I can't wait to go back with the Mavic 3. I only had the Air 2 when I was down there in the spring.

Hey Alan,

I have meant to comment on these for a while. You had a really great year. #2, 4 and 6 are my favorites. Your Mavic 3 really made a difference I think.

Thanks Jim - I am pretty happy with the quality of the images I can get out of the Mavic 3. The older Air 2 drone could get some nice images in perfect light but had some serious limitations as a camera. The M3 makes shooting early morning and late evening a joy.

Neat set Alan, your drone has been a great investment. In hindsight I should have gone for the Mavic 3 myself. The long lens is what I miss.

Thanks Jameel - I honestly didn’t realize how much I would end up using the telephoto until I had it. I was mostly concerned with the better DRof the 24mm lens.
