2022 was the year I finally sent cameras up into the air after decades of lusting to do aerial photography. I started out with a modest drone (DJI Mavic Air 2) but outgrew the camera after just a few months and ended up opening my wallet for a Mavic 3 with a far superior camera system. I did still take lots of images from the ground but sent up drones almost every chance I got since it gave me a whole new perspective on landscape scenes I had been shooting for years. I had a tough time narrowing down the field of favorites to end up with 10 for this thread. I could have easily filled out a group of 10 images from either my DSLR or aerial images but decided to present a mix instead.
1. In January I took a trip down towards the southern end of the Oregon coast to my favorite stomping grounds near Brookings. This first image is Arch Rock in the Samuel Boardman Scenic Corridor shot with the Mavic Air 2:
2. A sunrise shot at Harris Beach State Park:
3. An Air 2 image of Harris Beach State Park. The campground is just off to the right:
4. An Air 2 image of Secret Beach in the Samual Boardman Scenic Corridor:
5. In March I decided to sell the RV I have called my home on the road for the past 8 years but not until I took one last trip down the Oregon coastline starting out up near Newport. One of my stops along the way was Florence where I used the Air 2 drone to get an overhead view of some of the lakes just south of Florence. This is a 3 shot panorama of Tahkenitch Lake:
6. Hard to pass up opportunities to head up into the Columbia River Gorge. There are drone flight restrictions in several places in the lower portions of the Gorge due to the number of people visiting all of the waterfalls but still plenty of places to explore. This is Beacon Rock shot with the Mavic 3 drone:
7. I have done a couple of trips out to the Florence area since selling off my RV. This is from a trip in May with a shot of the Heceta Head Lighthouse with the Mavic 3
8. This fall I was back out in Florence once again to explore places where I could never drive my old RV but can easily access with my truck. This is a shot from the headwaters of Cape Creek that flows out to the Pacific right near the Heceta Head Lighthouse:
9. A morning sunrise over the Siuslaw River just outside of Florence. Shot with the Mavic 3
10. A recent cold snap slowed down the hummingbirds near our house in Vancouver and gave me a chance to get some handheld shots of them perched in our trees. This is one of the better hummingbird images I have captured in our yard:
