This is a great shot to show the scaly feet. We have seen far fewer American Coots in our area this year. Not sure if it is related to the Avian Influenza outbreak or not.
Roger, I have taken many shots of American Coot, while it's not the photogenic bird, it's very storyful.
These birds are so common, that most people walk by without throwing 2nd glance; I have had some close-up shots: from the ivory white beaks to the ruby red eyes, the green webbed feet ... very fascinating.
