They do. This one is just starting to open up. They are also pink or purple (pastels, not eye popping colors). I bet you saw them while wandering around in the SW. Though maybe you had more of an eye for structures & moccasins BITD.

Mozzies were not an issue. It wasn't all that early, but it was pretty gusty the night before, so maybe they got blown away? And I've been buzzed by them when it's just starting to get light, so it wasn't a time of day issue. Oh, right, I'd sprayed my clothes with permethrin before the trip...

Just a tinge of green for photosynthesis in the stems. You should have them in your area, too, though Mark Turner, author of Wildflowers of the PNW left it out of his book as he wasn't able to find it until 5 years later!
