30 April '19
Well, I did manage to make it to Shiprock, just barely in time to catch the remnants of the sunset. Was glad I made the effort to get there in time. (read: drove like a madman!!!)
Full disclosure: I did remove a number of power lines from the scene. They weren't helping the view anyway!
From US Hwy 163 looking into Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park. A very pleasant late afternoon on the way south. My ultimate goal for this afternoon/evening was to get to Shiprock for sunset, but I couldn't pass this view up!
L-R: Stagecoach, Castle, King on His Throne, and Brigham's Tomb.
In the southern reaches of UT 95, approaching the Hite crossing of the CO River, near where I caught the small textural studies of the sandstone formations.
A road runs through the canyon...Thanks and apologies to Alan's very cool road shot!
Crappy late afternoon light, but I thought the scale...
From my trip in late April, four small scenes found along Utah Hwy 95, south from Hanksville that, hopefully, show the staggering variety of colors, erosion, patterns and textures in the sandstone of Southern Utah.
The drive down Hwys 24 and 95 was one of the most enjoyable I've ever made.
Another take from UT Hwy 24 running along the San Rafael Reef. If not mistaken I believe that's Eardley Canyon cutting through the Reef in the center.
Thought it worked well in color and b&w, though I prefer the color version. You?
The scenery all along that highway, and 95 to the south, is...
The Colorado River and red rock cliffs at dawn on an overcast morning. Along Hwy 128 @3/4 mile east from Hwy 191 and Moab, UT. 4 sec exposure. — in Moab, Utah.
At the "Angle of Repose" (minimum angle at which any piled-up, loose material will stand without falling downhill).
I learned this term in the Pulitzer Prize winning book of the same name, by Wallace Stegner. One of our great writers of the American west!
I caught this scene while shooting...
4-28-19, Dead Horse Point. The United Nations Tablet about to be engulfed by the increasing rains, and a couple sightseers perilously close to the drop off into the Canyonlands! — in Moab, Utah.
From 29 April, Fisher Towers from the best pov. Thanks to Craig K. Carr for showing me a few years ago!
That afternoon the sky was seemingly closing in, especially over the La Sals in the background. Not enough to ruin the view, though.
After the magnificent view from Green River Overlook, I headed back to Moab for a late breakfast. But I had to stop for this view along the way, still up on Island in the Sky, before the sharp switchback down the hill to the highway.
Three shot pano of the massive buttes on the plateau, Monitor...

Sneaky morning light in the Canyonlands.
Marvelous view, and really cool with the dappled light on the red cliffs beyond.
For an indication of scale, from my shooting location it's @ 4.5 miles to the little 's' curve in the Green River, and near 40 miles to the snow capped mountains in...
Softer light and colors, as the evening moved into the blue hour. With just enough remaining glow on the dock to be pleasing, I thought.
(Sorry Jim, same dock, different angle. :p)
After running up Hwy 128 from Moab and getting the Fisher Towers shot I posted yesterday, I continued up across the river and up to I-70. By that time it was raining pretty heavily up on the plateau and along 70 for quite a while on the way to Green River.
After stopping in Green River for...
On leaving Moab the morning of 30 April, I took a bit of a roundabout route.
Along Hwy 128 east of Moab, I saw this view of Fisher Towers from farther up-river than I expected them to be visible. The heavy sky stuck with me, and in fact later in the morning it rained quite heavily as I...
Another sample of the stormy weather I had the first night in the Moab area. This is another view from The Needles Overlook, looking northwesterly.
The wind was absolutely howling, making me hang on to anything to keep from being blown off!
