Nice images, everybody!
I don't get to National Parks or Monuments much since I usually have my dog with me so.....here is Colorado's 1st National Monument. It was created in 1908. Because of it's remote location (about 1 1/2 hours on a 14-mile 4x4 road or a 7 mile backpack), it lost its status due to lack of traffic in 1950. The Wheeler Geologic Area is now part of La Garita Wilderness.

My first time there was as a backpack, sleeping at about 11,000', listening to my heart pound and elk bugle all around me. There was a rancher who would pack in with some of his horses, then ride out with some & bring his others in. He'd spend a total of 2 weeks there every fall. Pretty nice deal. The next time, I had a high clearance 4WD, but in some ways I missed walking in. I didn't miss walking out, though!

Wow Monika, I have never seen this before that I recall. What a very cool place. Love those spines in the shot.

What was the original name of this, or what is the name of this location?
