Emerald Lake and Burgess Mountain, Yoho National Park, British Columbia, Canada

This lake is a real beauty. It was found and named by British guide Tom Wilson not the American cartoonist of Ziggy fame. He called it Emerald Lake because the water is greener than the other famous lakes in the Canadian Rockies. He had previously named another lake with this moniker but quicky changed the name of the original lake when he saw the deeper green in this lake. That other lake was none other than Lake Louise.

Just in case you are unfamiliar with Ziggy, here are a few of his cartoons.

That's an amazing emerald lake.
That is pretty unbelievable isn't it, Monika? If you ever get a chance to photograph the Canadien Rockies between Banff, Yoho and Jasper National Parks don't hesitate to do it. I used to teach geology field courses there during the summer but never had the opportunity to photograph when and where I wanted. It is almost impossible to screw it up except for bad weather conditions.

Hey Doug!

Now that's some green water! No wonder he named it Emerald Lake.

And thanks for the cartoons of Ziggy. That used to be one of my favorites.

Thank you, Jim. That is green isn’t it. It evidently has rock flour that is different than that of Moraine Lake and Peyto Lake.
