Interstellar Airglow

Hey all,

This is a pano I shot back in June from Eagle Rock in Lake Tahoe. During a few of my test exposures, I noticed that there was a ton of green in the sky and I thought I had my color balance set way too far into the cyan. I soon realized it was just an overwhelming amount of airglow like I had never seen before. I went ahead with the entire panoramic and this was the result!

The whole pano is around 60 total images stacked for noise reduction with 20 stacked images merged for the pano. Took a long time to put this one together, but the finished product was totally worth the effort!

Nice stitching work to get the lake water level for a pano this wide. Quite an amazing sight - makes me want to see it in a larger format.

Josh, this is a stunning shot. I think I know this spot but just never had the good luck of clear night, beautiful details, well executed & nice stitch & blend in post processing.

Thanks Alan! Yeah getting the horizon straight was quite a challenge. Many little edits to get it right in case it does ever go to that larger format in a print.

Josh, this is a stunning shot. I think I know this spot but just never had the good luck of clear night, beautiful details, well executed & nice stitch & blend in post processing.

Thank you Oliver! Funny you say that as I went out to shoot this comp in late February during a night with a forecasted clear sky. When I showed up at 3am with 10° weather it was mostly cloudy so I didn’t even bother to shoot anything.

how can you merge that many images when the stars are constantly moving

Thanks Ben. Surprisingly photoshop puts the images together really well even with the movement. I start left and pan right while shooting the pano. I’ve found it makes the Milky Way arch more and helps it merge better.
