Yosemite to restore names to historic attractions under $12-million settlement

The Majestic Yosemite can be called the Ahwahnee Hotel again.

The National Park Service on Monday reached a $12-million settlement in a long-running legal battle with Yosemite’s former facilities operator that permits that name — and several others — to be restored to their historic attractions.

“I've said from literally Day One that these names belong with these places, and ultimately belong to the American people,” Yosemite National Park spokesman Scott Gediman said Monday. “So to have this dispute resolved is huge.”

The U.S. government paid $3.84 million of the settlement and Aramark, Yosemite’s current concessions operator, paid $8.16 million, Gediman said

It was blackmail from the start. I can’t believe a judge would see it any other way. Those low life scumbags at Delaware north should be put in jail and made to pay back all expenses of this nightmare to the park service.

Yep, total black mail.

Though, I will take the service provided by Delaware North over what Aramark is providing any day of the week. For one, the Cafeteria at Yosemite Lodge has been turned into a horrible sterile mess of very expensive food. The Cafeteria was one of my highlights of my trips to Yosemite, going there after a hard day of shooting and I could decide on various pasta options, and they would have different chicken or fish options, and all sorts of burger options. So literally you would have a dozen or more choices and much of it freshly cooked for you. Now, you have like 3 options and nothing is cooked fresh. The look of it is now all stainless steel. It's lost it's "in the woods" ambience and instead looks like you are in downtown New York. Aramark has ruined much of what I have loved about Yosemite for so many years.

For the record, I never stopped using the original names. ;-)

Most of the eating I do in Yosemite is at Degnan's Deli. Great breakfast sandwiches and regular sandwiches for lunch. (They have pizza too.) One of the few things Aramark does well is to provide free wifi there. It's a great place for a mid day break to eat, rest, check weather and color forecasts for sunset and recharge anything that needs it. By the time dinner rolls around I'm shooting sunset somewhere and it's late when I finish. Dinner usually happens back at a campsite or a hotel microwave.

I've been twice this year and am seriously thinking of a fall color trip Nov 1-3. I love Yosemite.
