Winter in the Chisos

This is a pano from the first trip for my wife (my 2nd) to Big Bend National Park. Surprisingly, the high desert gets a bit of snow. In fact, we were snowed out from staying in BBNP one year as our reservations were the Chisos Mtn Lodge and the road was closed due to snow. However, it is not as frequent as this is still the desert. Here, we see a bit of snow still on the mtns. Mid day picture but light was subdued by clouds as well as winter keeping the sun lower on the horizon offering better lighting conditions. I used to have a nice print of this hanging in my office and it looked very nice. 5dmkii, sigma 24-70/2.8 EX. I was still new to this camera (a decade ago) and this was when I was appreciating the higher MP camera for single frame cropping having recently moved up from the ancient 5d at 12.8mp. This is a single image pano.

Nice contrasts of the desert environment and the patches of snow. I like the thin clouds and skies too. Quite the contrast from the description of this park in one of your earlier posts of this place with scorching heat :)

I recall making the same switch between the 5d and the 5dMkII long ago. My old 5dMkII got converted to 590nm IR.

Wow Jon! I sure love the contrast that the snow makes! That's super cool. In Joshua Tree, it can snow once or twice every winter, but it's usually just on the ground, and there are no cool looking peaks to let the snow stick around a few days.

Winter temps are generally nice. At or just below freezing at night, 50's during the day. Perfect!

Thank you! Yes, the mtns add a lot to the park. Always in the backdrop if not up in them. Stay tuned for much more!
