Winged Wednesday 4.15.2026 — Yard Birds

It’s Winged Wednesday—where feathers, flutters, and flight steal the show! Whether they’re soaring, skimming, stalking, or just pretending to know what they’re doing… birds, bugs, bats, or anything with wings—if it flies, it belongs here.

Always open theme. All winged photos welcome.

This week, my contributions are yard birds.
Which sounds peaceful, and sometimes is—right up until something starts yelling, chasing, stealing, or making eye contact like it pays the mortgage.
Turns out you don’t need to travel far to find personality. You just need a chair, a camera… and the willingness to be judged by something weighing three ounces.

Gambel’s Quail
Hair like a question mark. Behavior like the answer is “run.”

Looks soft. Thinks loud.

Headbanging professionally since before it was cool.

Verdin
Tiny, energetic, and absolutely certain it’s in charge.

Nature’s version of, “I’ll just sit here and pretend I belong.”

Delightful set of yardbirds even if these didn't have any hit songs on the radio. The quail is my favorite as I have always loved their markings and habits dating back to when I grew up down there. I have never seen a Verdin before. Neat little bird.

Beautiful set Eric. That Orange Sulpher sure knows how to pick a flower colour.
"Yard birds" only works for me if my yard includes the local river.
Our spring migrants are definitely coming back. The American White Pelicans are a harbinger of spring here in Saskatoon.
Ring-billed Gulls and California Gulls have been back for awhile now and the American Crows are carrying sticks and grass for nest building.
The Canada Geese are a dominant bird and pretty much go where they like.

I have some yardbirds I can add to the mix here.

A robin checking out debris at the end of a driveway checking out what might be in the gutter:

And an ever present representative of the local crow population. Its a rare moment when you can't hear at least one of these birds hollering out to the rest of the family from the treetops.
