Why upgrade?

Just asking myself these questions and thought I would share. First off, my current 5DSR 50mp without an AA filter to an EOS R5 45mp with an AA is not altogether an upgrade. But the rest of the features are.

  • Photography has been a great retirement hobby. It provides intellectual exercise (post processing) and physical. I try to keep in shape for camping and hikes and have photo excursions to look forward to.
  • But when your walls are covered with prints of most of your bucket list locations, what do you do next? Why you buy a new camera so you can return and do a better job.
  • Of course I am also a gear head and want to try the next generation. Particularly better DR and high ISO NR as well as less weight tilt screen, wi-fi and Bluetooth as well as vastly improved focusing. From this list, DR and high ISO Nr are probably the only items that will help me get better images. The rest are more about convenience.
  • Not sure if I have 1 or 5 more years to dedicate to this hobby, so I don’t have a lot of time to wait for a better option, like a studio version of this camera with no AA and more MP. I don’t print large enough for that to matter much anyway.

These are good questions to be asking yourself before emptying your piggy bank. The rest of us can offer some feedback but taking that next step is not one we can really answer for you.

At the moment buying new camera gear is not a high priority for me at all. I may yet convert one of my old camera bodies for IR and covet playing with a drone but new camera body/lenses isn't on my list at all.

Thanks for sharing Ben!

I am glad you got the upgrade. Night time photography is a new wrinkle for you, something new and different. Which it’s great when we can change things up a bit.

It’s funny you mentioned printing, I don’t think I have actually printed anything new in over 2 years. All of my photos are for web purposes anymore. Not that I couldn’t print. I still make both a print and web version when I process.

Thanks Jim. I have not been using my camera right. That is I sometimes have the long exposure NR off. It happens because it was assigned in some shooting modes and not others. I did an experiment yesterday with and without the the LENR at ISO6400 30 seconds and another with it one for 5 minutes (lens cap on). The difference is amazing. Not that there is no noise or that I would like the results at ISO6400, but it did take it out of the horrible range. This is with my 5DSR since the new camera has not shipped.

I am waiting for a dark night to do some experiments. I want to see the difference between 14mm and 24 as far as how much MW I can get. The other is to see how ISO 3200 F4 30 seconds looks versus f2.8 20 seconds. I could get a 24 f1.4 or even a 20 f1.4 for night work at a reasonable price.
