The competing hobby - that knot hole is actually the live edge of a slab of west coast maple that came from someone's yard in the Portland area. There is a lumber yard in Portland that specializes in salvaging hardwood from urban forestry. I buy it as rough cut lumber and mill it down to make cabinets like that one in my office.
