Waterfall Wednesday 8/12/2026

Time for another round of falling water imagery so dig up whatever you have and lets celebrate water demonstrating obedience to gravity

My offering for today is from my first visit to the waterfall trail along Sweet Creek near Florence Oregon. This is the first set of falls you encounter on the trail from the lower parking area. In the years that have passed since the day I took this I have seen this basalt ledge with just a trickle of water as well as raging torrents that sound like a jet engine with water a couple of feet deep ripping over the edge and tossing around logs like the one here like toothpicks.

Pile on your whatever you have.

Very nice shot, Alan.. the beautiful colors and detail around this small waterfall nicely complement the overall scenery. It's a shame I don't have new shots of the waterfalls.. and I don't feel like looking for old ones.

This is Grotto Falls on the Tennessee side of Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The trail goes behind the waterfall!

I like the zig zag path the cascades in these falls present - neat falls. Having a trail behind the falls is pretty nice as well as there are often some nice views looking downstream from behind.

I know this scene well - and am usually reaching for my towel to wipe off my lens after shooting this view. In mid winter you can get soaked standing on that bridge

I recently fixed this shot of the waterfall a little.
The "Meadow waterfall" is a national natural monument in the TANAP area (Tatra National Park, Slovakia, Europe). It is 12 meters high, cascading, falling from the edge of a travertine terrace into a small lake. The soil in the area is strongly reddish, it is a natural healing spring.

Very cool - glad you decided to yank something out. I like these falls and it looks like you caught them with a fairly low flow level which accentuates all the nice cascades in the drop. From the looks of it there are times of the year with a lot more water coming through here but with a lot less detail as the water tumbles down the cliff.

Thanks Alan for the nice and interesting comment. Yes, there is less falling water here at this time of year. Somewhere I have a full shot of the waterfall with the lake, but it is not in this photo, because there were many visitors at the lake.

Not the most attractive waterfall I've ever seen, but I gave it my best shot. This is Makalia Falls in Lake Nakuru National Park in Kenya. This is during the dry season so the flow was unimpressive.

Falling water with 3 tiers and a long drop on the last one - what's not to like? Glad you stopped to shoot/post them.

I like this shutter speed for these falls. It leaves a lot of details in the spray as the water descends over the cascades that add some character to the falls.
