Waterfall Wednesday 2/16/2022

I have something a little different for my starter falls today. Last week I drove up the Columbia River Gorge hoping to get some shots with my drone. Turned out the wind was howling so no way I could fly. I had brought along my DSLR just in case but had no tripod. As I was driving the old highway and reached Shepperd's Dell I noticed that all of the concrete barriers that have been in place since the Eagle Creek fire in 2017 had been removed from the parking area so I pulled in to see what things looked like. It was a bit of a shock to see the place with so much of the vegetation gone so I took some handheld shots to compare with the many I have taken there through the years. This is a comparison between a shot in the fall of 2008 and last week.

It looks like it is going to be a while before this returns to normal. That fire was such a shame.

Nice one Ben - any chance you drove around in North Cascades NP that summer? Reminds me of the falls along WA20.

It looks like it is going to be a while before this returns to normal. That fire was such a shame.

Yeah - notice that the remaining trees are scorched around the bottoms of the trunks.

The falls that got hit even worse are Elowah Falls. You can see Elowah Falls from the freeway now as almost 100% of the vegetation was incinerated down to bare rock.

The trail up to the falls was just reopened last fall but every time I have gone past there the parking area was packed.

That is a pretty waterfall, Ben. I love the curves in its path.

I like this scene framed by the foot bridge - very nice. Any water that demonstrates obedience to gravity counts as falling water for purposes of Waterfall Wednesday and pour off from waves works fine at least for me

I think many of us have been curious about the recovery of the Columbia River Gorge, so thanks for the comparison Alan. I am hoping as there are hints of green there that once spring hits, a lot more green will be showing.

Thanks Jim - hard to tell how much green will be visible in the spring but certainly more than what is shown in this image. The bases of the bigger trees in this image are blackened from the flames but others are untouched. As can be seen from the fall shot there are a lot of deciduous plants in this scene that may be still living and are awaiting spring to put out their leaves.

Those are some really nice falls Jim - interesting to see the height of the trees along the banks at the base of the cliffs. I like the the way the falls cascade down into the small gorge.

A late addition to the festivities. This is an older pic (last year) of a little known waterfall called John Neal Falls in NC. No path to this one--one has to bushwhack/be able to do off trail navigation. Beautiful fall to me and thus worth the effort.

Glad you bushwhacked your way to these falls so we could see them - stunning view with some lovely cascading steps for the entire visible length of the falls.
