Waterfall into Crevice

I think there is a lot going on here. Again, great location, but I would have looked for a different composition. The logs are competing for attention.

A suggestion I will add...look to slow that water down with a 1/2 or 1/8 shutter speed. That will portray "energy" within the water. You can also take the "milky" route and shoot it at 2+ seconds.

Hi Pete,

The blown highlights is the biggest issue here. That's one of the problems with shooting in midday light. Did you use a polarizer? That will help cut down on reflections on the logs like you have here, but the range of light between shadow and light is pretty huge when shooting during bright light, so your only solution is to be watching your histogram and exposing so that the highlights are not blown.

A photo like this would be a good candidate for the Critique Forum where others can spend some time and work with you on improving this.

Thank you all for your helpful feedback. It was shot had held with a point in shoot camera, since I didn't have a tripod while there, but I agree a slower shutter speed would have given a nice effect. I did adjust contrast and brightness based on my monitor, but maybe too much based on your feedback. I also noticed that when viewing on another computer or my iPhone, all these posting can look different. I'm not sure if I can fix blown highlights if that's the way it was captured, but I'll give it another try.
How would I delete and repost it?

Hey Pete,

The best way with edits, is to just add it to the thread. You don't want the original deleted because people who view the thread in the future won't see the original and then our comments won't make sense to them. Plus it's helpful for others to learn as they see the change.

Good shots can certainly be made with P&S cameras, but you will find yourself being limited unless you have one where you can shoot raw images with.

Monitor calibration is something you need to do. We don't have a tutorial up on it yet, but you can google it. But by calibrating your monitor it will help you get more consistent results and also will provide more accurate comments from other photographers since most of us calibrate our monitors. The iPhone has a fine display, but I would not trust it. It can give you a decent idea on what a photo will look like, but it tends to saturate colors more and also seems to not show blown highlights as much.
