Trackside Blooms

A nice set of poppy blooms along a berm.

This is one of those scenes where what you see in the frame hides the mood of everything else surrounding it. I was out on a lunch break walk in Vancouver in an industrial area near where I worked and right next to the main East-West BNSF tracks leading to the switching yards for the North-South BNSF/UP rail lines. You did not want to be here with a passing train since there was a road about 20' behind me and inside of the hearing damage zone for the train horns.

Thanks Jameel - when I first started working in downtown Vancouver I made a point of trying to walk though all of the streets just to see what was there. Going through this area was one of my favored lunchtime loops.

Thanks - its fun to frame the world out of a colorful scene and just pretend this isn't on a railroad berm.

Trains coming into the Vancouver switching yards are running at very low speeds so you know when one is coming through long before they get to the horn zone.

The area has been completely revamped with the redevelopment of the old paper mill site. BNSF moved their tracks over onto a new approach into the switching yards and the street I was walking along is now gone along with the RR crossing so no more horns anyway. The abandoned paper mill buildings that were behind me when I shot this got demolished and the new Waterfront Park area took its place. These poppies are usually considered weeds to most gardeners so would get yanked out.

Beyond gorgeous

Who the hell would yank out these beautiful flowers. It is one of the most beautiful flowers in nature. You handled this one perfectly, Alan. You have another image here if you crop into the bunch of flowers at the bottom and do a vertical.

LOL - gardening in the PNW is the opposite of life on the desert. Up here almost every plant is an invasive species and instead of carefully watering things you want to grow you have to rip out anything that is trying to crowd out what you wanted in your garden. These poppies and Shasta daisy blooms blanket the space between freeway lanes and simply get mowed down by the WSDOT maintenance crews. The poppies grow along road shoulders in the gravel and any other place where no one is regularly mowing or weeding.
