Theodore Roosevelt NP Tour Guide - Northern Unit

This is the Northern Unit of Theodore Roosevelt National Park (TRNP) in North Dakota. I was there a month ago exploring and totally loved my time there. You might not have heard of this National Park before, I know I hadn't until recently. It's divided into 3 sections, this is the Northern one. One thing to note here that seemed funny is that the Southern Unit is in the Mountain Time Zone and the Northern Unit despite being basically north of the Southern Unit, and still in North Dakota, is in the Central Time Zone. It's something to keep in mind if you plan on doing both units in the same day.

Come explore, and maybe your next photo trip will involve heading to TRNP too!

Please Subscribe and Share! I desperately need more Subscribers. :)

All comments are welcome,

PS. @Ben Egbert , please text Rick about these tour guides as he was asking about Theodore Roosevelt NP.

Great video Jim. It looks like River Bend Overlook could be either a sunrise or sunset spot. Oxbow looks to be a sunset spot. Do you agree?

Other than the Bison, what other wildlife did you see there? Since I am driving, I'll take my entire kit so I'll be prepared for whatever. Looking at all of that lush green, I may have chosen the wrong time of year to go. I'm just about recovered from Ben and my trip to the Maze/Dollhouse so I am raring to go. :)

O
Neat travelog Jim, I have already shared it with Rick.
Thanks Ben! I hope doing it with a photography mindset and tips will be helpful. I have had some comments over the past Tour Guides that people like knowing directions and other photo tips.

Thanks Rick. You aren't going out there until fall right? I definitely think Spring/Summer would be the best. Though no telling how long the grasses stay green way up North there.

Both River Bend Overlook and Oxbow Overlook face south. So I think they both would be equally as good for sunrise or sunset. River Bend I think has more options for compositions, but there was less people at Oxbow. It's a 20 minute drive between them so you can check out both when you go pick which appeals to you most. It will be interesting to get feedback from you on how you liked TRNP when you get back.

I am going the second week in September, so officially still summer. Usually at sunrise, I do not have to worry about other people. :)

I had intended to do Badlands and then do Gunnison on the way back home (which I would rely on your Your Guide of that park) but since I am bucket-listing National Parks, it seemed dumb not to stop by Theodore while I was a "few" miles from it.

Yeah, for sure if you are anywhere near close to it, you need to go.

My favorite spot in TRNP is in the Southern Unit, the Wind Cave overlook and trail. That's where I shot those couple of Milky Way timelapses I had posted a while back.

As to Black Canyon of the Gunnison. If you want to shoot the Milky Way, go to the Northern part. But if you want incredible sunrise or sunset shots, go to the Southern section. The Southern section is also way easier to get to and has the way better views of the canyon, it just doesn't line up with the Milky Way at all. (If you do go to the Northern Unit, make sure you have your map set before you in there as cell reception gets really spotty, and if you saw my guide on the Northern section the route to get into it is no straight forward as you kind of weave your way back though a half dozen old country roads.

Oh.... forgot... about Theodore Roosevelt NP, the wildlife I saw there was Bison, wild horses and prairie dogs.
