The Industrial Lake District

Most people think that the English Lake District is a rural paradise but in the past it was an industrial area with charcoal production, coal, lead and copper mining but most of all slate production. There is still one working slate quarry but the scars of the hundreds of abandoned ones are still visible although nature is starting to cover them up. If you look carefully the slate spoils are visible in the middle distance. The images were taken in October before the Autumn colour had arrived and before the heavy rains. Ken

If you look carefully you should be able to spot the 2 climbers giving a sense of scale

Interesting area and its history as well. I like the silver birch image and can see why it gets photographed a lot. Your selfie and the last image are helpful for giving a sense of scale to these scenes.

Thanks for giving the history. The cavern looks pretty cool. I agree with Alan that your selfie really helps for giving it scale.
