The Great American Thunderstorm of 2023

This was the thunderstorm that just wouldn't end. Typically from my experience, and thunderstorm will have lightning in it for 20 to 30 minutes before the storm just peters out or moves too far away. But this one went on for hours, maybe as long as 6 hours.

Not only did the lightning storm last for hours upon hours upon hours, the frequency of the lightning. In this case it was going off about 1 every 20 seconds, increasing to the point that the lightning was flashing every 3 to 4 seconds.

This 3 minute timelapse represents 3 hours of time, from 9pm to midnight.

Interesting to watch the cloud rotation change directions during the sequence.

What would happen if you had a lightning detector trigger going for a lightening show like this and assembled the results as of it were a timelapse?

Thanks Alan.

Yeah I saw how the wind changed, that was weird to see.

I have done what you suggested about the lightning trigger. I don't use a lightning trigger, though I have one. I am just too old school, I prefer to lock in my Remote shutter abs capture it all. But the last big storm a year or two ago, I pulled out all of the lightning shots (which would be the same as using a trigger) and put those in a Timelapse. It compresses it so there is lightning in every frame, the problem is the clouds. They jump too much between frames and give the Timelapse a really jerky feel.

I could even do it with this, as I did pull out all of them lightning as I wanted to be able to more easily pick out what images I wanted to process as single images. But again, I don't think it looks good.

Jim,
This is an amazing timelapse. I loved the cloud to cloud lightning. You should try and sell this to a TV station I think you might get some takers.

I appreciate that Bob. And that's a great idea I need to explore.
