Sunset Indecision

Is it a sunset? Is it raining? Or both?

Somewhere in New Mexico from 2 days ago. I was hailing a trailer to my sisters house in Colorado from California. I didn't want to exit too much for side trips but when I saw he clouds being lit up as the sun was setting, I had to take an exit.

Wow!

Histogram Equalization could really bring out those clouds- can demo, if OK.

Pity about Apple's hill-top strong halo.

Could be fixed. For example, make a mask: edge detection > threshold black and white > edit mask so only the halo is white, all else black. Maybe blur the mask halo slightly. I'll try that in the GIMP.

Thanks so much, If you play with it, for sure post it.

Some of that halo could be on me, I edit my photos from my phone in Photoshop Express on my phone, and have noticed a lack of sharpness when downrezzing to post here. So I had increased the Texture and Sharpness to help keep things sharp. This was less then 30 seconds sharpening, I could have masked the ground too thinking back.

I photographed this same scene also with my Nikon Z8, I need to pull that up and process that one for reals.

Thanks - I had a play yesterday but can't upload from my computer to this site (new computer, no on-line access to my FTP site yet).

Later ...

Maybe this works ...

drive.google.com/file/d/1nlOD3x4ywi3gzqKagNcJV_e14ORS-pSh/view?usp=sharing

right-click>'open link in new tab'

Top left is Contrast-Limited Adaptive Histogram Equalization ## with default setting

Top right is Equalization in the GIMP.

Bottom left is same as Top right, but with the halo masked and some hue/chroma/lightness adjustment.

Bottom right is histogram Equalization using the G'MIC plugin for the GIMP.

All a bit OTT for illustration ...

Thanks for those examples, it's a lot of great ways to work on this image, I think I like #4 the best.
