When will I ever learn to leave early enough for a shoot? That was what I was wondering as I rushed towards Lake Littoistenjärvi.
The destination was decided at the very last minute. Once I arrived, though, it proved to be the right call. There was an unobstructed view to the western horizon.
By the time I set up the tripod, the eclipse had already begun. Oh well, nothing to be done about that. I positioned the camera on the rocky shore, adjusted the settings, and started shooting.
On the second camera, I mounted a telephoto lens to snap some close-ups. A few spots were visible on the surface of the Sun. Beautiful.
A strong gust of wind was blowing on the shore, but it began to quiet down as the maximum point of the eclipse approached. Coincidence or not?
When the maximum eclipse arrived, the light across the landscape turned strange. It was like looking through smoky glass. Hard to put into words. The surroundings were bathed in a subdued, slightly greenish light that felt off in contrast... Just the wrong kind of light.
My marveling was interrupted by honking and splashing.
A mute swan flew towards me with a loud commotion. Soon it swam past, accompanied by half a dozen cygnets and a couple of other adult swans. Noble creatures.
When the Sun dipped behind the forest, I packed up my gear and headed back to the car.
A few hundred photos on the memory cards, including raw material for a composite... Those will come later, if at all. By evening I was so tired that I didn't have the energy to go out looking at shooting stars anymore. Plenty of time for those—next year at the latest.
