Smoke - Need alternative location advice

We are currently in Glacier NP. About 1 out of 3 days have been “productive” because of smoke from both nearby fires as well as some further west. Current plans were to head up to Banff/Jasper area for September and wind up back in Glacier NP in early October for Larch trees. We are concerned that we will be battling smoke issues the whole time. Since we are all ready out here (coming from North Carolina) I want to see about alternatives further south. Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, Wyoming … doing fall foliage in one of these locations etc. .. we have done SW Colorado a couple times, so would probably prefer something different. Suggestions?

I have run into smoke issues in mid September and early October on more than a few occasions in recent years at locations west of the Rockies. Glacier, Yellowstone, Tetons, Silver Falls State Park (Oregon) and Mt. Rainier N.P. all come to mind as places where I have encountered wildfire smoke along with lots of other venues in between. Keep your fingers crossed for some rain to settle the dust, tamp down the fires, and add some color to the leaves as they change.

We are already seeing some trees changing in the Portland/Vancouver area mostly due to the stress of a hot and completely dry summer.

Best site to see the current conditions for smoke distribution is the Fire and Smoke Map. This screen capture shows the current smoke situation in western states including where you are up near Glacier:

A crystal ball (that works) would be really handy for dodging the smoke and finding optimal photo venues in your situation right now. Can't say that I have one at the moment.

Thanks, that's the smoke site we have been looking at. BC and Alberta appear to have already burned 5x-10x the average years average. Looking into maybe going down to Grand Tetons - we were there last month. Here the rain seems to help for a day and then it starts all over again. I have not done it in the fall. Appears that Sept 20 - Oct 4 should be a good window. Your thoughts?

Hey Craig, you can look at the Tetons, but I wouldn't go there before Sept 24, 25th from my experience.

But I will also say from experience that the Tetons seem to be a vacuum for wildfire smoke, so I am not sure how much better it would be then Glacier.

Have you captured fall colors in Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan? They have every fall color there is, so it's very similar to fall in Vermont.

You could also consider the Eastern Sierra. Fall colors there typically start around Sept 28th or so.

Jim

PS we miss your photos! Please post some when you have time.

i'm planning roughly the same trip, but not leaving until early september.

my plan b is heading out olympic np and the oregon coast, maybe even northern california. but that's smoky now too. if it's clear i'll hit south dakota for badlands & custer state park, maybe wind cave. i might go to the tetons and up to livingston, mt. or drop down to 80 and go through snowy range in wyoming. just depends on how far south the smoke is.

my plan c is the south west, which currently looks relatively clear. probably great basin np, capitol reef and zion, glen canyon, grand escalante, monument valley, rhyolite ghost town, valley of fire state park, maybe some national parks in california or do sedona and some stuff around there. on the way back i'd hit tucumcari for some old buildings, maybe big bend np or amarillo, new orleans and stop in florida to see my brother before heading up the east coast to go home.

We are going to go to Canada anyway. We may hit Door County when we are done though those states have all had smoke issue too. Thanks

We ended up in Canada and there have only been a couple days where the smoke was really bad. I have O'Hara hike on Wednesday, but after that was thinking of swinging down the Tetons. Do you think Oct 1-4 is too late for that?

Wow Craig,

These are really awesome you did great up in Canada! You should post the photos in a new thread, most people aren't going to view an old thread like this again. And these are really great!

I haven't heard any reports on the Teton's, I can ask around. Usually it's getting too late by the 4th, maybe on the 1st it would still be okay? But this is kind of a weird year, so it would be hard to venture.

Oh I just remembered, there are webcams in Teton NP. I have used those in the past to gauge the fall colors. There are also a couple in the Jackson Hole Ski Resort that are handy to look at. You might want to try those.

Thanks. I'll follow up with some dedicated posts later. As usual, I process about 1

Thanks, I'll post some later.... I really don't process much when I am "out in the field" so don't have much to show.
