Schoolhouse Falls

Have had a huge amount of rain around here, so I checked out one of my favorite falls. The water was higher than I have ever seen and the surface of the plunge pool was choppy so long exposures were better, i thought. Only problem was a huge amount of spray! I did a lot of wiping and praying, lol. Here is what I got...

That's an awful lot of water coming over those falls. The only problem with slow shutter speeds with heavy falls like that is that they create their own wind so there are no still moments for the vegetation in the scene. Still neat to see those falls with this much water flowing.

Hey Stephen, it's always fun when we are able to get to a place we like and it has some conditions that we had not seen before. These are all really nice with #2 being my favorite. I really like the way the foreground water is curving away in it.

Hi Stephen,

It's hard to pick because they're so similar. The branches coming in at the edges are a bit distracting. The light is bland enough that a black and white conversion might be a consideration. Simplifying the rocks and coming up with a shape would have added to #1.

Thanks for your comments, Tim. I usually move around a lot and take different vantage points and agree I would have liked to avoid the branches but really could not without zooming in as in the third pic (70mm). Here, without waders, there was precious little real estate. If I had moved left, I would have been swamped! I may have been able to make better compositions with different focal lengths, but conditions were a bit challenging. Here is a short exposure shot I took to give an idea of how choppy the plunge pool was (long exposure and polarizing filters make quite a difference) and another few to give a more normal appearance of the fall.

All beautiful!! I like #2 with the waveform in the water and the bush is cropped out. I also like the close up in #3.
