Schooled by the Professor

Professor Creek, that is. I went to Moab over New Years, and even though I only took my camera out twice, Jim Fox asked that I post the shots I got. Not great scenes, but acceptable. It was relatively warm (low 20's at home, but 40's in Moab), no scenic snow or clouds, but nice to hike. Professor Creek was kind of a pain to walk up as there are many creek crossings, this time with the creek mostly frozen and the rocks to rock hop across on were covered in ice. But there were only 2 other people there. From the 2 kitchen trash bags left at crossings, I think they may have used them to keep their feet dry (the bags were gone upon my return, when I would have picked them up, so I only picked up tissue with brown smears on it........ugh!). I didn't get all the way to the waterfall because the creek crossings had gotten very tedious.

This was early on, before it was even a canyon.

This side canyon looked like it had potential. In wetter times of year it probably has nice pour-offs.

I like the creek shot at the top - neat to see the grasses encased in clear ice. Kinda hard to use the rocks as stepping stones in those conditions. Interesting little side canyon you came across. Planning a return visit when it has some water?

love the subtle moodiness of the first photo. the soft, warm tones against the frozen grass seems like it shouldn't work, but it does. beautiful winter photography. the canyon looks like it's fun to hike through right now.

Yeah, on the way back, I just splashed through the water/ice in my boots. I've been up there in warmer weather, I think to the waterfall. It's nice, but when it's warm out, Moab gets crowded, so I only go in the depths of winter. ;)

Thanks, Pepper. I always like the clear ice over grasses, leaves, etc. This one only worked when I cropped out the distracting background.

Thanks for posting these Monika! :)

I like the frozen grasses in #1, I think it's cool when they get wrapped in ice. And I like the look of #2, it has a look of a photograph from a 100 years ago with the greater contrast in it.

Your conditions were less then ideal, but as you say the crowds are less, so that helps to make up for it.

I like the “warmth” of the frozen scene in your first image—nice! I also like the composition of the B&W canyon image with the small bare branched bush centrally composed.

Thanks, John. I was lucky to get some nice back lighting for each of those shots.
