Redbud

This was taken in soft early morning light as I was leaving Yosemite a few days ago. These Redbud trees in bloom are really cool looking as the color really makes them jump out. I don't know why it's called Redbud when the blooms look purple, but that's it's name.

Thanks Alan! This was in an area where the road curved alongside the Merced River and so this whole 1/4 mile area was all in shadow hidden from the early sun. As soon as I drove just a bit more down the road the Redbuds were still alongside the road but when in the sun, they didn't stand out as much as in this soft shadowed light. It wasn't intentional on my part, but I sure lucked into the best time to shoot these I think.

Also what's interesting, is I normally don't got to Yosemite in April, I will wait until May so I can shoot the Dogwood blooms, so these blooms are not something I have normally seen. It's definitely given me reason to add April to a time to visit Yosemite in the future.

Beautiful scene! I’m not sure about the western variety but here the bud is reddish and the flower is a bluish purple. And that is the extent of my knowledge .

Very nice Jim, I was there last Monday and saw them in bloom. I’ll be up in Yosemite valley all next week, maybe I’ll drive down and find a few shots.

Beautiful scene! I’m not sure about the western variety but here the bud is reddish and the flower is a bluish purple. And that is the extent of my knowledge .

Well Mike, that is about 100% more knowledge then I had.

This patch was just below El Portal on Hwy 140. But there were patches leading all the way up to close to the 140/120 split.

Really nice ! Funny we only have redbuds in my neck of the woods that I will classify as domesticated, meaning on peoples lawns planted by landscapers. I would love to see these in there natural habitat. One of these will be replacing an old pink dogwood on my lawn that has run its course most likely next season.

Hey Jeff, I had missed your suggestion here. I can see where I should have shot with less DOF I think, as I like what your edit infers in regards to separating the Redbuds from the background.
