Red-naped Sapsucker

Up in the mountains in the rain yesterday and ran across a flock of these busy eating. I've never actually seen one up close before, so it was a treat for me. He looks a little dirty though.

It was skittish at first. Usually the few times I've seen these they were way up in a tree. This time I was sitting in my Jeep in the drizzle and just patiently waited until he came back around the tree, because he was curious also... But it took around 15 minutes. However I actually had stopped there because a fairly large herd of elk kept romping back and forth across the Jeep road in front of me, and they were chattering elk talk to each other which is really cool if you've never heard it.

Nice catch woodpeckers we’re always skittish when I tried to photograph them

Wow! What a treat for us too. I love woodpeckers! They are so different, they are always so special.
