Random Rocks

On our recent trip to UT, on the way to Capitol Reef National Park from Moab, we came across one of the many bizarre rock formations that are all across southern Utah. These were right up against the highway.

I almost did not ask to stop, as we had the rest of our party following in another car, and I was feeling bad about making them pull over. Beyond that though, the wind was really whipping up, the clouds were scudding across the sky, and I was not sure about standing outside. But up to this part of the trip these were almost the only clouds we had seen, and the rocks looks pretty interesting. I ended up getting out, and getting sandblasted a bit as I tried to hand hold a couple of images before scuttling back to the safety of the car. The clouds were moving so fast that the light was changing a lot, giving the 2 images included here a different feel that goes beyond the different framing of the scene I think.

Comments and critiques welcome!

Very cool indeed Mike! There are just so many cool formations in that area, and lot's of them are not even a National Park. It's a great place to pull over and pause. #2 is my favorite.

My GPS always lies to me about how long it will take me to get from one place to another in southern Utah because it always takes me hours longer than what the GPS said. Of course I stop everywhere I can find a place to pull off. This is why my wife won't travel with me when my camera gear comes along :D

The place is a wonderland for scenes like what you did get out to shoot. I like the asymmetries in the first image of the two. There is a small chunk of fence down in the lower right you might want to clone out.

Thanks for the comments!

Yes, I saw that fence, was about to clone it out, and then got some feedback from a local photographer friend that said he liked it because it gave some scale to the image. So I thought I would post here and see if other's had an opinion on it. I am still thinking to clone or crop it out, but will be interested to see what other kind of feedback I might get about it.
