Rainier Reflection

My sunrise shoot in Rainier was planned around getting an image like this...I wanted a clear sky, I like it better that way for the reflection. Sometimes dramatic skies can be overpowering if they are also reflected in a nice still and calm lake. 3 image pano with the Batis 18, because I didn't have a lot of time...so single frames, no brackets. I was running back and forth trying to figure out what the best angle was...to get that good color to the east was important...by the time this sunrise was over I was exhausted and had racked up over 2500 steps running around making the most of it!

This is gorgeous Travis. I had never considered your take on clouds and a still reflection. I am always learning something new here.

Thank you very much Ben. My take on the reflection comes from having seen so many that have a nice still lake or body of water and the reflection is just overpowering...purely a personal preference. I also wanted Rainier to be the star of the show up in the sky...so a clear sky worked for that too.

Nice take on an iconic scene. I like the low mist over the water.

I love those lakes and have been there for the sunrise on more than a couple of occasions. I do tend to favor at least a few clouds and some mist if I can get it but it's a neat scene almost any way you can get it.

Thanks Alan. Yes it is an iconic scene...and I was happy to have been able to add it to my portfolio. I ventured over to the smaller lake later in the day, but didn't like the view as much and it seemed impossible to get down to the shore. The bigger one further down didn't seem to have a view of the mountain, but I didn't hike down there.

I agree Ben, this is a very interesting idea. More and more I have been becoming less squeamish about clear skies. We seem to have avoided them for years, but there are times when a clear sky might be preferred, like with this.

You had plenty of visual interest in the sky to not need clouds. The mist rising out of the still water is gorgeous & lends a peaceful feeling.

This is really awesome Travis! A great reminder also how we don't always need or want clouds. Thanks for a little insight into your thought process.

Nice light and the low mist over the water. The still lake is just about perfect.
Thanks Jameel. That little bit of fog on the water was a nice and welcome surprise. I spent a lot of time shooting it too...and it shows up really nicely in the timelapse I did.

Study and work with minimalism for a while and you can really learn to appreciate clear skies.

Clear but colorful.
Yeah, the color was short lived and it had my fat rear end running around...

Thanks for the feedback and kind words.

Thanks Jim. When I was in Seattle I was watching the weather...and really wanted clear skies for this shot...but also because at MRNP clouds at all can obscure the mountain...glad you appreciated the little insight...anymore into my head is dangerous....
