Porth Nanven's Guardians, Cornwall

The Cornish coast is all beautiful, wild and inspiring, and it's among my favourite destinations. One of the locations I particularly enjoy photographing there is Porth Nanven, portrayed here at sunset. The two rock formations felt like guardians to the Porth's entrance. 25 seconds of exposure with my Hasselblad X1D, Hasselblad XCD 30mm and Formatt-Hitech Firecrest Ultra filters.

Thank you for viewing, best regards

lovely image Vieri. I especially like the group of foreground rocks and the water arround them at that shutter speed. Kem

Great theme and scene. the rocks are perfect. No one could have done as well on purpose. You've got the eye for these places.

Thank you very much indeed Ken, glad you enjoyed it & the composition here! :)

Nice one Vieri - like Ken I like the water textures around the foreground rocks.
Thank you very much Alan, glad you enjoyed the textures here! :)

Lovely image Vieri, I have visions of the Poldark's when I view this.
Thank you very much Ben, much appreciated, glad you found it evocative! :)

Lovely image Vieri. Did you use a ND for this?
Thank you very much Jeffrey, glad you enjoyed it! :) Yes, I did use both an ND and a Grad ND here, if I recall correctly it was a 6 stop ND and a 3 stop Grad ND.

They certainly do look like guardians. Great job here!
Thank you very much Jim, glad you enjoyed it! :) It's such a great location, and so different with different tides - you can actually walk to, and easily climb over, the guardians at low tide

Thank you very much indeed Alisa, I am glad you enjoyed the pic and the water treatment!! :)

I keep looking at this one. It is very serene. It is almost a "minimalist" composition if i you will forgive the adjective. The sea calmed by the long exposure, of course, but the symmetry of the composition and restrained and complementary color palette (yellow rocks with yellow sky, blue rocks with blue sky and sea) make for a soothing and almost surreal image. Lovely job.

Hello Steve,

Thank you for you comment and sorry about the late reply, I have been away from fora for a few days (busy with other computer work, unfortunately, and of the boring kind!). I really appreciated your comment, which mirrors my experience of - and behind the creation of - the image. Since I first went to Porth Nanven I have been intrigued and inspired by the different colour of the rocks on either side of the river's mouth (very apparent if you look at the boulders in the foreground, which are made of different kind of rocks). Sunset light, coming from frame left, contributes greatly to enhancing this effect, keeping the guy on the left in the shadows while lighting the guy on the right. I have been coming back to that location a few times before I got weather conditions that worked for me in terms of colour palette, cloud cover, tide level, and sea's activity.

It's not a "wow" image at a first glance, perhaps, but is one I really love and am pleased with :)

Best regards,

Vieri
