Petrified Sunset

I usually end up stopping by the Petrified Forest a few times a year. As I am zipping along the I-40 to or from New Mexico, I try to time the sunset with some place interesting, and oddly enough the Petrified Forest gets the call very often. The only bad side with the Petrified Forest is that the Rangers patrol the road there and kick everyone out within minutes of sunset. So some times are a bit more challenging then others especially when the best color that day may be the after glow that happens 15 minutes after the sunset.

All comments are welcome,

Jim

I like the view with the onset of dark on the right hand side. Looks like there was more coming for the color show. Can't say that I have visited that place since the early 70's.

Too bad they have to be heavy handed about closing up but the Petrified Forest has had an incredibly serious problem with the portability of the primary attraction for decades. That was a problem when I first visited the place with my grandparents in the 1950's.

Jim, I like the soft glow in a sky that reflects off the logs, painting them gold.
That's right, taking sunset, sunrise, or night pictures of Petrified Forest is challenging, due to the schedule. However, there are some opportunities in a winter. Another way is to camp in a park.

Hey Alan,

Glad you liked this one.

Yeah it's too bad that there are always those few who just can't respect the land and leave the petrified rocks alone. Because of those few, it messes it up for the rest of us, or at least makes it more challenging.

Thanks Sasha,

I was really glad to see how the color did reflect off of the logs, I like that part of this photo too.

Yep, winter can be a good time. I haven't tried camping there as I usually just use it as a sunset or sunrise spot while driving. But that would be a good idea.

Timing does indeed make it tough. But you really captured the sparse, foreboding nature of that patch of desert! Well done.

I have heard that they are strict on closing hours, such a shame. This certainly makes a unique landscape. I guess I was here in 1948 as a kid.
