Old Mossy

@Amy Nelson took me around to some really cool ponds the other day in the Cimarron area of SW Colorado. The ponds from what Amy said can have different looks, with this one it had some cool moss forming across the pond, I think Amy had said this was the coolest the pond had ever looked! It reminded me a bit of some of the ponds @Dean seems to come across a lot.

I captured it normally, but then since I was with Amy and wanted to impress here  I pulled out my IR filter. She of course had already pulled out her IR converted camera and was having at it!

The water area is the one area in this that surprised me. I thought for sure that super green moss would have turned Yellow or Orange, but it didn't. So I don't quite care for this as much I as I thought I would.

This is my image using a 590nm conversion: (standard color swap)

This is a sample of what a 720nm color image should look like:

I'm a little baffled on the color you're getting with your 720nm filter. As you see in both cases the pond scum should be the same color as the foliage, and the water should be a very dark blue almost black. It just seems like there is something off in your color swap process. Maybe drop you saturation level and play with the HLS.

Interesting effect using the IR filter in this context.

Your "moss" looks a lot like blue-green algae that invades a large number of water bodies this time of year. Keep your distance - the algae makes the water toxic.

Hey Amy, I wanted mine to look like yours!!! But sadly it took a turn to the south...

My sensor seems to be really adapt at pulling out reds, maybe that’s part of it. I will send you the dng tonight or tomorrow and see if you can pull out the right colors, maybe I missed a step?

Interesting comparison, Jim, you just need to have a camera converted. Maybe two at different wave lengths.

Thanks Ben!

I was talking with Amy about that when we were together the other day, my problem is I can't get anything converted or won't get anything converted until I can for sure figure out the hot spots that some lens cause. Determining that will let me know which camera system I want to convert, Sony or Nikon. So in the meantime, I just will keep practicing with the 720nm filter on my Nikon system.

My versions of Jim's "Old Mossy"
All I did was after adding the Nikon Profile was select a new White Balance point and everything seem to work out great. I should have updated Jim on using a neutral point, my bad Jim, great image.

There is some discoloration in the upper corners caused by the filter, I would image there are ways to eliminate them but I just don't have the time to do that now. Thanks for letting me so what I could do with this. Can't wait to see you new version.

Great edit Amy. Thanks so much for this and the additional tips.

I won’t be able to try it again until tomorrow as this weekend is a trip in the Rockies with 6 grandkids. Leaving Silverthorne and will be heading north to Steamboat Springs.
