Northwest Montana

I gathered some of the drone footage I captured in Montana into a video. I've been working on learning Davinci Resolve for color grading and editing. Still lots to learn both for capturing smooth footage and processing but it does show off the area a little.

Any thoughts are welcome.

Nice footage. Brings back some nice memories. You are making more of an effort to be a videographer than I have done and the few videos I have made don't demonstrate smooth video transitions. I mostly fly to some spot and then stop and take still images.

I made several trips up to Glacier when I still had my RV and traveled near a lot of the areas you covered in this video. I always made a point of coming/going around the Kalispell area via a different route each time.

Have you ever flown down in the south end of the Flathead Valley? There are a lot of gravel bar formations in that area from when Glacial Lake Missoula got emptied by the collapse of the Glacial Dam near Clark Fork. I drove that route a couple of times but couldn't really get much of a view of the formations from the road.

I'll have to check that out. I also want to follow the South end of the Flathead River by the bison reserve.

Hey Kyle,

Much smoother flying on this, video. I like the way you went from subject to subject. Never staying so long that it was boring, but long enough to give the viewer a feel for it.

One suggestion for the white water, is to underexpose for the water. I have found with Photoshop Elements (mainly what I use to edit actual video footage) can recover about 1/2 stop of highlights and 2 stops of shadows. So I have set my exposure according when I am filming around water, underexposing by 1 to 2 stops.

Are you using a polarizer on the camera? I have a snap on one for my Mini-2 and I just leave it on permanently.

I had an ND/Pol on for the segment around the lake near the end. It hadn't arrived yet when I went to the falls.

I shot in dlog for the falls, so I have some room to control the highlights more. I'm still getting used to Davinci for the editing.

I have not used D-Log before. That's something I need to explore as some say it's similar to editing in Raw.

It does provide a much flatter starting point. From what I've gleaned, DJI's d-log isn't truly log, but it is more malleable than shooting in "normal".
