Both are cool and I keep going back and forth between them. I think I have to go with the wider view of the first.
These are two powerful images. I think I like the second because of teh more powerful MW.
Very cool shots Tim! I like the wider view of #1 as Kyle stated, but I also like #2 as it shows more of the Milky Way. I would crop the bottom off of #2 I think and lose those rocks. While they do frame the shot a bit, I think just having the reflection would be stronger.

Both are pretty neat shots and I do like that first one with the wider view. The second one is quite nice too but I agree with Jim about maybe cropping out the rocks at the bottom.

Nice work (esp. carrying the extra lens in there just for astro!). I agree with others that the 2nd is stronger for me, but I'd loose the rocks. I'm also more into a bluer color balance on night images (see Jim's recent Joshua Tree shots, even though it may not be "true".

Both are great shots but I prefer the first on. It looks as if the MW is errupting out off the mountain. Very cool indeed!

Thanks for all the comments everyone! #2 was a compromise shot. Originally it was a 4x5 landscape showing more of the lake, but it ended up unbalanced due to Temple Crag and the Milky Way. I prefer #1 since it doesn't use the Milky Way as prominently. I found myself operating my night shooting schedule exclusively around the Milky Way core, so I'm trying to step away from it. This time the majority of interesting features were to the south and made including the Milky Way a necessity. It was too far east in the early night, and it ended up being a distraction, so a tucked it behind the left peak to make it look like an eruption (like Tom said).
