Mule Ears - BBNP

To continue my journey with BBNP, I will post images that span different trips and different mediums (film and digital) of a feature known as Mule Ears. As a history side note, when the border was much more fluid than today, the military used to fly planes in the area (think bi-planes, early 20th century) through this area on patrol. The daredevil pilots would often fly through the "ears" as a stunt. I always thought this feature offered good photographic opportunities.

5dmkii, tamron 24-135, captured along the old River Road looking North.

looking east, canon rebel with 40/2,8 stm with yellow/orange filter, Kodak TMX

and from a little further back, a few years earlier in 2012, a bit further back and again looking east. Minolta srt201, rokkor 50/1.7 with polarizer, kodak ektar film.

next up will be another rock feature from BBBNP....one that supposedly has degraded and not the same now as it was when captured

I clicked on the thread expecting to see the Rocky Mountain flower called Mule's Ears. I do confess I was wondering how that plant would survive this desert environment :)

I think the first image does the most justice to the formation with the neat side lighting and the desert floor vegetation in the foreground.

I am partial to the 1st as well. Next trip I am going to try and get a better image of it. I was surprised to see it from River Rd from where this capture is. I missed it and had to back the truck up.

These look great! The angle of #1 I think makes those rocks look most like mule ears to me. Each image is awesome, and I am not sure on my favorites, but #1 is cool in that it looks like a giant mules head just poking up above the hills in the background.
