Interesting - I would not have guessed at the Toyota diesel engine swaps but it certainly makes sense. Toyota's 4 cylinder gas and diesel engines are among the most widely used engines on the planet and nearly bulletproof. 200-300K miles on one of those is a young engine.

A Toyota engine? Oh man... that does not compute! Ugh... I wouldn’t have guessed that, for as cool as the exteriors look and as accurate as they seem you would think they would be having 350 short blocks in them all? Hmmm...

Back to the photo, that chrome sure looks great.

Jim - I think the diesel engines are cheaper for them to operate. They certainly are limited by economic opportunity. It was explained to me that government controls the wages. Most people make $50.00 per month. (Not a typo!) And a professional person, like a doctor, might make as much as $100.00 per month. Many people must try to work an extra job. I will eventually post an image of ISIS. She is a hostess at the front door of a restaurant/bar we discovered while walking around one evening. She was tall, good looking, posed for us to take pictures and spoke really good English. She told us that she is a psychologist; but "this is Cuba, so I must work another job!"
