Miss Alabama

"Miss Alabama," also frequently referred to as Nightmare Rock or Lady Face Rock, is a painted rock formation near the entrance to the Alabama Hills near Lone Pine, California. Since the 1980s, visitors have been transforming this natural granite boulder with paint. Currently, the quirky landmark features a bold star over one eye and bright red lipstick, making it a popular and whimsical roadside photo op. I don't like it - it could encourage immature visitors to the area to assume it's OK to deface the natural attractions of the area. Still, it is worth a photo if you're just driving by. 720nm IR converted Nikon DSLR.

I have seen this several times but have never seen anyone taking real images of it beyond instagrammers and their selfie obsessions. Looks better as a B&W than in color.

I am with you on not approving of this type of defacement although its always worth considering that the rocks was there a long time before the paint was and will still be there long after the paint is gone. It was definitely a jarring sight for me the first time I came around the corner and saw it and can only hope this type of activity stays out of the rest of the area.

Hey Michael, great image of this rock! I have stopped and photographed it a few times.

It's such a cool looking rock, I didn't think about how it might encourage others to deface other rocks. I guess the oddity of it grabbed my attention, and I didn't think beyond that.

If only those instagrammers would confine their "work" to this one rock, then move on, mission accomplished.

I think the artist(s) chose this rock because it has a pullout right in front of it, so many people stop here for a photo. It does attract attention from all passers by.

Hmmm, I don't recall seeing that. Or maybe I just erased it from my memory........ It's been over a decade since I was there, so maybe it wasn't quite so eye-catching?
