Milky Way at Black Canyon

The Milky Way at the North Rim of the Black Canyon. It's walls are not quite as picturesque as the South Rim, but they are still quite interesting, and most importantly the Milky Way lines up really well when you are on the North Rim compared to the South Rim. And then of course there is the longer several hour drive to get there compared to the South Rim, but for the sake of the Milky Way, I think it's totally worth it. Oh, and did I mention that it probably only gets 2% of the amount of visitors that the South Rim gets? So it's much more peaceful also.

This image is a blend of 2 images, one taken from a timelapse that ran all night, and then 2nd, the ground layer was taken early in the morning after I was done shooting my timelapse, and I could aim the camera down into the canyon. The depth of the canyon along with the height of the Milky Way makes this an impossible 1 image Horizontal capture. Now if I went Vertical I could have captured it all at once, but verticals just don't work well for timelapses and playing on a TV.

The timelapse will not be able to show the depth of the canyon, though it will show some of the walls. But since this is a still image I decided a blend was in order to share the experience of the canyon with the Milky Way better. The word Composite could be used I guess, though I tend to think of composites as the merging of 2 completely different or significantly different compositions, or having moved significantly between the images used in the final image. In this case, all I did was angle the camera down from the positioning for the Milky Way. The tripod never moved, it was just moving the aim of the camera down into the canyon so it could be seen in more detail. So I consider this a blend. You can consider it whatever you want, but hopefully in the end you will consider this a pleasing Milky Way image. :)

All comments are welcome,

Jim

I would call it success🤗

And I would add, if it's right for you, follow your gut. If someone else doesn't like it they should have eaten lunch at a better restaurant😈

Ha ha, thanks so much Tim!

It's not whether others like it or not. I was talking about whether someone would label this image as a Composite or a Blend.

The word historically Composite = Fake. I don't like doing composites for that reason. To me, a "Blend" is different then a "Composite. A Blend to me equals "Real". I have never been one to use Sky Replacement for example, because that then is a Composite and not Real. Or I have never taken my Milky Way images from one location with a tracker and then taken a ground layer from another location and then composited them into one image. I know lot's of people that do that. But that's not for me as I don't feel it's now real. But if that's what someone wants to do, and how they want to do their night time photography, that's totally fine. It's just not how my moral compass drives me to do mine.

Anyway, that's my little pet peeve, and my own little hang up I guess. :)

Love it Jim it was dark on my phone but perfect on my tablet
Thanks Ben, it's a little dark on my phone too but seems fine on my monitor. But then I wanted it to be on the dark side. It's a bit of a fine line to walk.

Very nice Jim. I think the lightness is about right. And for me, combining multiple exposures from the same location from the same shoot are a blend and thus "real". Those blends overcome the limitations of technology more than they create something that wasn't there.

Thanks so much Kyle, I am glad you like this and I appreciate your thoughts. I like your thinking, that this isn't creating anything that wasn't there.

It came out well, Jim. Composite or blend? I guess it depends on what one considers stitched panos, since that's all this is. You didn't add anything that wasn't there, which seems to usually be the point with composites. I think I would just call it a stitched pano.........

Thanks so much Monika! And yeah, I should have just called it a pano. :)

I appreciate that.
