All that little fawn can do is helplessly look. It couldn't defend itself. Mama's watching, not that she can really do much, although the sharp hoofs can do damage or kill you. But the predator usually wins.
The littlest ones are scent free and camouflaged, so the predators like coyotes, mountain lions, bears, golden eagles (no scent with birds though) and anything else can't easily find them. Spots, to blend in with the dappling light in the woods.
So many dangers for the little guys, there's over a 50% mortality rate with them. Newborn Pronghorn get it worse at about a 15% survival rate.
In the end it makes sense though, the food chain. Otherwise the woods would be completely overrun with one species or another.
