Memorial Day Memories 2019

Yesterday I went to the National Cemetery in Santa Fe New Mexico. Going to a National Cemetery is something that had been on my mind for a while and Memorial Day Weekend seemed like a natural fit. It had progressively been getting stormy during the day to the point that it started pouring rain after about 20 minutes there, but I think that gave me enough time to capture some quick images that popped into my mind as I first drove up to it.

The one thing I did early on in the shooting was to slow the shutter speed down. As the storm was approaching it was getting very windy. My first thought was it was too bad I couldn't really capture this with a video, and then my second thought was I could slow down the shutter speed and show the motion of the wind in the flag movement.

If anyone wants to add their Memorial Day photos to this thread, please feel free.

Three great images, Jim. My daughter and son-in-law are West Point graduates. My daughter got out after four years but Mike recently retired as a highly decorated colonel. Fortunately, they are both still alive and living in Kansas where Mike teaches at Fort Leavenworth.

Thanks Doug! And it’s great to hear that your daughter and son-in-law served also.

Jim, catching the flag "waving" adds a timeless feel. Great collection.
I will take you up on additions.
These 3 are from Arlington on May 23.

This is the beginning of flag placements at Arlington for Memorial Day.
In just 4 hours, these soldiers from the Old Guard Regiment (oversee all of the ceremonial duties here) placed 265,000 flags
Notice this is the backside of the grave marker and shows the spouses name if she/he is buried there too.
It is VA policy to allow spouse to be interred with husband/wife.

This image is a simple but poignant reminder.
Note the year of passing on these 3 grave markers, 1968
I saw several other clusters of grave marker dates
The year 1968, saw almost a third of all U.S soldier deaths @ 16,592. This is 50% more than years 1967 or 1969
Sadly, 1968 was a very busy year at Arlington as these clusters of burials are a testament to...

Love it! The long exposure really works well with the flag moving in the wind.
