Lets Play 6-30-2018

See the Lets Play Guidlines above. Yet it has at least two serious flaws which I will see if you folks can determine.

You can imagine the excitement I felt when I saw this sunrise develop over the Grand Canyon. I believe this is Yaki Point taken March 2014. I was using a 5d3 and a 17tse shifted to get as much of that sky as possible. I also had a Lee 3 stop ND grad filter. The color and saturation were far more brilliant in person than the raw image shows.

Show me what you would do with it.

This is a cool one Ben! I am downloading this now and will work on it in a bit. I have been thinking on getting back to the Grand Canyon, so editing this photo will help tide me over until I can get back there.

Here is my first attempt Ben. I had to deal with the extra dark blue in the top of sky, and the lower sky along horizon was leaning towards an odd green cast. I basically did 2 conversions in ACR, one for the ground, and then one for the sky and then blended them in Photoshop.

I have an idea. Let's see who can find and correct the 2nd issue.

I am game. It is not as set as the color issue so we may get several good answers.

Ben - any chance you had tilt not set to zero for this shot? The distant cliffs don't seem quite as sharp as the foreground and Canon's TS-E lenses are usually as sharp as most primes.

I was not using tilt, I seldom did. As far as I can see focus is ok, and while it may not be spot on it was not on my list

For others, I shot this with the intention of cropping, so feel free to crop. The 17TSE did not have a zoom feature

As soon as I posted that image I saw a problem I needed to fix - the edge of the graduated filter was too low and I needed to lighten up the area just below the canyon rim.

This version replaces the first one.

Hey Ben, I had figured that you had planned on cropping the snow out since the snow could be viewed as a distraction and also by cropping it gets your horizon off of center. But I wanted to leave that up to someone else to correct.

Though looking at this some more, a crop off the top would work also, especially since you have so many colorful clouds, losing a few won’t hurt.

I am still sticking with the full image but Jim's comments made me think about checking the horizon. The Grand Canyon rims are not flat and level but It does look a bit better with the rim a little closer to level.

Yes, I also found I needed to rotate it a bit from dead level to account for the non level rim. Something needs to be done about that centered horizon and it's a stinker.
